Heading Home

On Saturday (3/22) we took a road trip to Vicksburg Miss., a very old city with a lot of history. We enjoyed the riverfront with the very large paddle boat and the murals painted on a large portion of the levee.

We went to Vicksburg National Military Park. This beautiful park is a 16 mile drive thru a Civil War battlefield which was the siege of Vicksburg by the Union. We could have used more time because there is so much to see. One can see the original trenches that were dug out by both the Union and Confederate soldiers. The cemetery is so big- one head stone after another. Close to 20,000 deaths and injuries during this siege which lasted several months! Hard to imagine the pain and suffering that went on.

Easter Sunday we left Clinton, Ms headed to Tupelo Ms. The Natchez Trace is a nice slow ride with quite a few places to pull off. There are mostly signs explaining what historical building or part of the original Trace was there years ago. Some of the stops are just different trails through different types of nature. The rest is left for your imagination.

We traveled around two hundred miles and camped at Trace State Park, backed up to a lake. A beautiful area, quiet, and very scenic. We bought oak wood for a campfire and tonight cooked brats over the hot coals. Roy was pleasantly surprised to find several tv channels with only the antenna. We liked the spot so well, we ended up staying three nights (3/23 through 3/25). On Monday, we went into Tupelo to see the home where Elvis was born. It is a very small two room home that was built by his father and uncle. There is an interesting museum there as well as. On Tuesday we just “chilled” and enjoyed a nature trail at the park and Roy grilled steaks over the open fire. We really hated to leave Trace State Park. Abby enjoyed it also because she was able to get out of the motor home and walk around (only with her harness and leash). We saw about a dozen deer on the last evening we were there.

We left the park and headed to an RV park about 10 miles north of Nashville. The Natchez Trace dumped us off at mile 444 on to Route 100. Good thing we had “Millie” (our GPS). Nashville is not a fun city to drive a motor home through—six lanes of traffic in each direction! The RV park was full and put us in a driveway with water and electricity! We were not happy campers, especially since we had made reservations the day before!! Oh well, have to take the bad with the good and it was only for one night.

Today (Thursday) we headed north on Rt. 65. We made a stop in Bowling Green Kentucky and toured the Corvette museum. Very, very nice! Beautiful cars that were very nicely displayed. Very suprised to see Roy's old classmate Lyle Chaimberlin have his car on display. We arrived at Cave Country RV Park in Cave City, Kentucky, had a good lunch and headed for Mammoth Cave. There were lots of people there because of spring break! We did get in on a 2-hour tour. Wow! Lots and lots of steps, very narrow passages and awesome rock formations. We’re really glad we made this stop.

Well, it looks like we will be heading back to reality tomorrow. The weather doesn’t look that great here so we may just boogie on home. It will be a long day!
