Our Yuma Excursions

Well, our move to Yuma took us just a little over four hours. We found Cocopah Bend to be a very nice RV Golf Resort.  It is very clean and well maintained.  Our site does overlook the Colorado River, however we can't actually see the water because of overgrown vegetation.  On the other side of the river is California and we are also close to Mexico.  That means that we have seen the Border Patrol in this area more than once. There is much going on here, seems like one could stay busy without leaving the park.  We went to burger nite, where we had a delicious burger and the entertainment was a pleasant addition.  If mother nature would just lighten up a bit! The days have been very sunny and warm, but VERY windy here at the park. We can drive a couple miles into town and the wind doesn't seem nearly as strong!  The wind comes right down the river so our park gets the brunt of it.

We haven't let much grass grow under our feet, as we have been doing lots of different things.  Our friends, Deni and Karen Erdman from Wisconsin arrived here the day after we did, so it has been great having them with us to do the exploring.  We went to a historic prison in downtown Yuma, right on the Colorado River.  It was extremely interesting and we are glad we didn't live in the early 1900's!  After that visit, we ventured out a ways from the city to Imperial Date Farm.  They have actual date orchards and serve date shakes!!  They were different, but quite tasty.

We went to two different flea markets the other day.  In the southwest apparently they are called swap meets, but are definitely flea markets.  But that morning we had gone to a very nice antique show at the Yuma Civic Center.  Some gorgeous stuff, but the Stearns have no room for more "stuff"!  We went to historic Yuma to a street festival and after checking out the venders, we found a neat old restaurant called Lutes Casino. The place was packed and no gambling, which was okay with the four of us since none of us are big gamblers.   We found out it was an old casino that had been converted into a resturant/bar.  It is quite an historic landmark in downtown Yuma.  Lots of memorabilia and good food.

Our friend, Ginger, had told us about a campground in El Centro, California that she and her late husband, Ken, had really enjoyed.  We thought we had best check it out and it made a nice day trip because we took back roads to get there.  We found that there is a lot of desert in southern California--sand dunes that seem to stretch for miles and miles.  We stopped at a lookout and thought that we might have been in the Sahara desert.  It was quite a sight and certainly much different than our midwest!  There were quite a few "off road" vehicles going up and down the dunes.  Sure looked like fun!  We did get to Sunbeam Lake RV park, but weren't favorably impressed.

With this digital age it is hard to stop clicking. Believe us, we did remove several pictures. In the dune pictures you can see the sand blowing. The fellow that owns the dune buggy said they were "waiting for the sand to dry out" ?? We later found that with all the week-end activity the sand gets packed (wet), the wind thus moves the sand that softens it (drys it out ) . Must be dune talk !!

Well, we had checked with quite a few folks about going to Mexico and found that going to Los Algodones was really safe.  Soooo, passports in hand, we headed there this past week.  There is a parking lot on the U.S. side which is relatively safe and then we walked into Mexico.  Lots of hawkers touting their dentists, pharmacies and other wares, just like any other border town.  We ventured through the maze of vendors and came away with a few drugs (antibiotics and Prilosec) and not much else.  Roy's scotch was more expensive there than it is here at Sam's!

Two things that Arizona offers is beautiful sunrises and sunsets.  They are both absolutely gorgeous.  Of course, we haven't seen too many of the sunrises.  Since retiring, we just don't see the need to get up early.
But we certainly do make the most of our days here.  Abby is the only unhappy one because she is left alone much of the time.  But she is coping as best she can.
