We've had a very relaxing December. We have a couple pictures of the many murals of Lake Placid. The one with the cows is on the side of Winn Dixie food mart. When you drive up a speaker emits the sounds of a cattle drive. In the early days, this part of Florida was known for being cattle country. This area also has many orange groves, as well as many lakes. In fact, there are supposed to be 27 lakes in this county.
We visited Highlands Hammock State Park. It actually started during the depression, with the CCC in 1933. They have many trails to view the plant life, and if lucky (?) some wildlife. We were too late for a tram ride, and plan to return for the tour and get more of the history of the park.
Our Christmas was very nice. We had Christmas dinner in the clubhouse with our neighbors. The club house is only a couple years old, and the hall is quite large. There were over 200 dinners sold. We had turkey and all the trimmings--much better than cooking in the motor home.
We have been walking the park every morning. The weather has been perfect for walking. Part of the walk is near the lake. It's larger than I thought it was. We still have much to see and visit. We took a ride the other day to the WP Franklin Corps of Engineers Park. The park looked to be very clean. The homes and size of boats indicated some hefty pockets of $$. It's not far to Fort Myers.
We mentioned previously that we had catfish in Mississippi. Well, we were taken to a catfish dinner here. It's not yellow perch, but it is good. I even tried the conk chowder that was very good. We have been eating out a couple times a week, checking out different restaurants.
The snowbirds keep coming in and the resort is filling fast. By Sunday our circle should be full. Today we had our New Years dinner in one of the empty pads. We grilled brats and everyone brought a dish. We had to have our ribs and kraut and barely had enough to go around, but fortunately everyone got a taste for good luck in 2009. Tomorrow we're heading to Fort Pierce to check out the Atlantic coast. More later.
